One of just 4 communities selected this year, the effort of a wide group of volunteers has resulted in this exciting award. Celebrate with us and the Lieutenant Governor, Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant, on August 3rd at these events during Nicolas Denys Days.

Turning the Tides:
At the St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site, visitors can take a scenic walk along the 800-meter long canal and watch as boats transit its unique double-gated tidal lock. The welcoming staff will enlighten you as they present the history of the canal and explain the workings of the tidal lock and swing bridge. Enjoy a day of fishing off the canal walls or walk across the lock gates for an afternoon hike in the adjacent Battery Park or the nearby coastal trail.

Christmas in July Kids Fun Day:
All proceeds go to the Children’s Wish Foundation so be sure to bring some spare change! There will be lots of games & prizes, a bake sale, Christmas cookies to decorate & hot chocolate, magic wands for sale sent from the North pole, writing letters to Santa, sucker pull game, coloring pages, and a visit from some elves. Christmas music will be playing & there will be a gift exchange (every child should bring a used toy wrapped & will get to exchange it for another used toy wrapped – toys that are not gender specific would be best!)

Canal Boat Tours
Join Richmond Adventure Planning for a 1-hour sail where the Ocean Meets the Inland Sea! Tour boat leaves the Ocean-side of the canal at 2:00 p.m. Monday to Wednesday. Call for group bookings (631-3754).

Poker Walk:
Hosted by Village on the Canal Association. Join us to win prizes for best hand, door prizes & BBQ. (Weather Permitting)

Battery Park Cultural Tour
Join Richmond Adventure Planning and learn about the rich cultural heritage of St. Peter’s, beginning when the Basque fishermen first encountered the Mi’kmaq nation. Battery Park contains the sites of three forts during the past 350 years – it provides a wealth of information on the formation of the New World. Along with the historic nature of the park, new trails opened in 2008 allow visitors to explore more of the park that sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Bras d’Or Lakes with the St. Peter’s Canal running alongside the Park. Monday to Thursday in July and August.

Teddy Bear Picnic:
Hosted by the Dr. Kingston Clinic Health Project, this year’s picnic will include storytime, crafts, physical activities and snack time. Don’t forget your favorite teddy bear or super hero – we’ll be giving them a medical and dental check-up!
Location: George Robertson Recreation Complex fields. (Rain location: St. Peter’s Lions Hall)

Village Scavenger Hunt:
The St. Peter’s Village Commission is hosting a Village-wide scavenger hunt. Test your directional and problem solving skills to solve all the clues while discovering St. Peter’s!
Prizes will be awarded. (Weather Permitting)
Location: Village Kiosk in front of the Post Office.

For children 13 & under – all talents welcome! This show will feature singing, dancing, playing instruments, poetry, comedy acts, etc. Prizes awarded to all participants! Nicolas Denys Museum Open House:
Hosted by the St. Peter’s Community Club, explore three centuries of history of St. Pierre, Fort Toulouse, St. Peter’s Canal, and Nicolas Denys.

Hosted by the Wallace MacAskill Museum Society, the auction will feature new merchandise, antiques, home baking, gift certificates, door prizes and bidders’ prizes.

Wednesday Night Sailboat Race
Hosted by the Wallace MacAskill Yacht Club, this a fun summer race series on the lake side of the canal, in Jackson Bay. Visitors to our community are welcome to jump on a boat and join in the fun. Show up at the Marina by 5:30 and check with boats that are preparing to race. You can also call Gordon at 631-3754 and he will find you a boat. After the race there is a jam session with local musicians at the Marina.

Talented Teens:
Join the local youth from across the County as they provide entertainment for all, open mic style! This event is sponsored by the MacBouch Restaurant & Lounge. Everyone is welcome. All proceeds go directly to the young performers.

Friends of Leona Chowder:
Hosted by the Friends of Leona, enjoy a delicious chowder dinner (seafood and corn chowder available) and show your support for our local breast cancer chapter. Enjoy your chowder in the company of friends, or if you are on the fly, get your chowder to go (order on site or call 535-2482). Supper should always be that easy…and that delicious!

Kids Fun Run (3.3k) – Hawaiian style

MacAskill Cup Regatta – Warm Up Races
This will be the 25th year for running the MacAskill Cup. As is our usual tradition, warm-up races will be run on the club’s buoyed short course, nearby the canal on Friday afternoon. The big race starts on Saturday morning, with a course of approximately 25 nautical miles (determined based on wind and weather) on the lake. Nicolas Denys Days Festival Parade:
The 2014 parade theme is “Celebrating our Community Spirit” and will include participation by local organizations and businesses, a host of characters, and the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia! Show your community spirit by participating in the parade!
Parade Route: Begins on DeRaymond St., left onto Grenville St., left onto Argyle St. (at the XTR Service Station) towards Richmond Villa, back to Pepperell Street and ending at the St. Peter’s Lions Hall. Swim the Canal:
Our inaugural “Swim the Canal” event revives a community tradition in a fun and safe way! There are 3 swim options through the locks and all swimmers will be awarded a certificate to acknowledge their accomplishment. This event will bring people together through a fun and nostalgic community activity, reviving what was once a rite of passage! Louie’s Cosy Corner will have snacks available. We are excited to announce that the Lieutenant Governor, Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant, will be on site to present St. Peter’s with the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award!

NiteLite Boat Parade & After Party – POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST 31
The NiteLite Boat Parade is back! We are really excited about bringing this popular event back to the Nicolas Denys Days festival this year. As in past years, local boats of all sizes and description are invited to dress in lights, and form a parade along St. Peter’s shores. It’s a spectacular sight, followed by a great party at the Marina. Prizes will be awarded for ‘best-dressed’ vessels in several categories.
