 Richmond County Area Events Calendar from Saturday, June 22 to Sunday, July 31 , 2019

St. Peter’s is a natural hub from which to seek out Cape Breton activities, attractions and experiences whether on land or sea/inland sea. We are within walking distance or a short drive away from some unique Cape Breton attractions and firmly anchored among many traditions and cultures.

For information and a full list of events and happening around Cape Breton and guide books and maps for N.S., PEI, NB, and Newfoundland stop in at the St. Peter’s Visitor Information Centre. Our hours are from 9am to 6pm Monday, thru Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sundays.

Re-occurring Summer Events

10am – 5pm: – The 17th. Annual Summer Surf Program will take place at Point Michaud from July 2ndto August 20. Register at Point Michaud Beach during class time. Lessons cancelled on days of extreme conditions or weather.There will be no programs or rentals on Tuesdays. Please call the Point Michaud Surf Hut at 902-587- 2988 or check our Richmond County, NS Facebook page for up to date surfing conditions.

Surf Clubs: Clubs include surfboard and wetsuit, with land and water instruction. Surf Club activities will vary depending on weather and tides. Please call 902- 587-2988 for an update on surfing conditions. Kids Surf Club- Ages 8 years to 12 years (must be accompanied by a guardian). Fee $100.00. Call 902587-2988 to register or for more information.

Junior Surf Club- Ages 13years to 19 years of age Cost $120.00. Call 902-587 2988 to register or for more information.

Surf Lessons – Lessons are a half hour of equipment familiarization and land lesson, plus 1 hour of surf instruction in the water. Lessons include surfboard and wetsuit and instruction. Dates and times may vary.

Individual Lesson – Fee is $40.00 and takes place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:30pm to 5pm.

Group Lesson – 4 person group lesson or 4 individual lesson package fee is $120.00. The lessons take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1:30pm to 5pm.

Wetsuit and Surfboard Rentals – Daily, from Wednesday to Monday, from 10am to 5pm. Fees (when not registered for package) – $20.00 per hour for both wetsuit and surfboard, $15.00 per hour for wetsuit only and $10.00 per hour for surfboard only. There is a lifeguard service at Point Michaud Beach, daily from 10am to 6pm from June 29 to August 25. Facilities – There are change houses, toilets and parking available. There is also a picnic area to the left overlooking the beach. Point Michaud Beach is located approximately 20 kms from the village of St. Peter’s along route 247.

9:30am – 11am: –The Richmond County Literacy Network will be hosting “Babies and Books”, at Richmond County Technology Center at 10036 Grenville Street, Unit B, St. Peter’s.  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to gather with their children and share stories, books, puzzles and toys together! This is a great chance to spend time with other parents and their babies!

Wednesday, June 26

10am – 11:30am – Mother Goose French for Fun at the Petit de Grat Public Library in Petit de Grat. Take the kids to the Library and join in the fun.

6:30pm – 9:30pm (doors open at 5:45pm) Song Circlewill take place at the Louisdale Lions Community Center in Louisdale. These song circles are for anyone who enjoys singing, playing and /or listening to live music!  The song Circle events will take place on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. Please bring instruments, music stand and change for a donation box at the door. The money is used to purchase food for our snack time from 7:30pm to 7:45pm with tea and coffee. Come out for an evening of fun! Meet new people, learn new songs and share music with others.

7pm – 9pm:- An evening with Leona Burkey, come and enjoy this amazing evening of entertainment at the Tara Lynne Community Centre in River Bourgeois. Admission is $10.00 at the door, There will be canteen services, and a50/50 draw.

6pm – 8pm: –Seaside Lobsterfest’s Paint the Town Red Contest. In the spirit of Seaside Lobsterfest, and promoting our village, we are decorating all things red. Special preference is given to a nautical them. Residents of St. Peter’s and surrounding area are asked to participate by decorating all things red. To ensure your property is included in the judging, please post your civic address in the comment section below. Feel free to post pictures of your property as well. Prizes awarded to the best-decorated storefront and best residents display, at our Grand Opening, on July 3rd in the evening, at the Marina. Admission is free. Displays should be up by June 28th, at the latest.  And please let’s leave things up throughout the summer to help promote our village until the next festival. Show visitors our community spirit. Help us Paint the Town Red!

Kitchenfest’s Concert at Dundee Resort & Golf Club at 2750 West Bay Road, West Bay, in Dundee will take place from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is $10.00/ all ages. Performers: Bonny Jean MacDonald, Amanda MacDougall, Kenny Stewartand Heather Cameron. Sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the concerts in the series, which is sure to feature great musical variety, lots of toe-tapping, and only leave you wanting more.

L’Ardoise

1:30pm – 4:30 pm: –Celebrations at the L’Ardoise Community Centre inL’Ardoise.  Flag raising and singing of O Canada followed by Canada Day cake, games for kids, live entertainment and free hotdogs for everyone.

LeNoir Landing, Arichat

10am – 1pm: –Public Market with local vendors. 2:30pm – 5pm: – Flag raising, singing of O Canada, live entertainment, children’s activities, Canada Day Cake.

Fireworks

The municipality will be sponsoring fireworks displays over St. Peter’s Bay and Lennox Passage  Provincial Park. Starts at dusk.

Tuesday, July 2

10am – 2:30pm – Dundee Summer Camps  (Ages 5 – 12) will take place at the Dundee Resort & Golf Club, at 2750 West Bay Hwy. The camp is open to locals, visitors and guests of Dundee. You can drop off your child for a day of fun and enjoyment. Activities will include boathouse equipment, indoor/ outdoor pool, games, rock painting, golf and hiking. Cost is $20.00 per participant (lunch is included). Please pre register by calling 902-345-2649 or by emailing recreation @dundeeresort.com. Those attending will receive a boathouse pass (value $10.00 to be used during the months of July and August.

9am – 12pm: – Lobsters R’ Us Facility Tour- Tuesday – Friday. Lobsters R Us, in Little Harbour is a state of the art, energy efficient, marine processing facility holding live lobster in Atlantic Canada. Take a free tour & experience the behind the scenes of this operation. Tours run every hour.

6pm – 8pm:–  Seaside Lobsterfest Grand Opening. Join David Stone and Vince Burke as they host our grand opening, at the St. Peter’s Marina, celebrating our history, culture, and traditions with local musicians and dancers in St. Peter’s, some cake, punch and good times. Bring the family and a lawn chair or blanket. Enjoy music, dance and song of our Mic Mac, French, Scottish, and Irish cultures.  Admission is free.

6pm: – Seaside Lobsterfest Lobster Crawl. Enjoy signature cocktails and lobsters dishes at each of the participating venues: Bras D’Or Lakes Inn, Louie’s Cosy Corner, Jiggs, MacBouch Tavern and Grill. Vote on Facebook for best cocktail and lobster dish. Winners are announced Sunday at 3 pm at the canal.Times for the events will be 6pm on July 2.

1pm – 3pm: – Seaside Lobsterfest’s Mermaid Spa at the St. Peter’s Lions Hall in St. Peter’s. Spa includes: Mini manicures, hair braiding, face painting, arts and crafts, treats and trinkets for each mermaid. Children with their own mermaid costumes are encouraged to wear them. Advance tickets required. Admission- $15 – Tickets by Eventbrite. Sale of tickets sale ends at 12pm July 3rd.

5pm – 7pm:– We love or Fishers at the Lock-masters Quarters Pub, Bras d’Or Lakes Inn. Tonight the Lobster Crews who have just finished their season will enjoy a special happy hour so they can celebrate the season’s end. Join them and hear some tales.

4:30pm – 8pm: –  Ales & Tales at the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn, in St. Peter’s.  Calling all craft beer enthusiasts. This is your chance to taste the best Cape Breton beer along with succulent lobster bites. Reservations are recommended.

6pm – 9pm – Seaside Lobsterfest’s Mixed Media Paint Night will take place at Louie’s Cosy Corner Restaurant in St. Peter’s.Cost is $28.75, which includes HST. All materials are provided. Jump aboard the lobster fishing boat with Captain Scott and his first mate, George, to experience lobster fishing on the southern shores of Cape Breton, in the Atlantic Ocean. Eat Lobster, and enjoy the Cape Breton culture, at St, Peters Canal, and St. Peter’s Bay.

Seaside Lobsterfest, puts on a fishing experience to remember.  Children love it. Adults rave about it. It’s a great experience, Seniors recommend it.  Come by the canal and register for an experience. The boat trip is free, where they will teach you how to fish lobster off our coast. They will show you how to tell the sex of a lobster, how to band them, and how to measure them.  Explaining how to set the traps, and haul them. It is a very interesting experience you won’t forget.

Once back at the Canal, you can pick out your own lobster, and cook it on the shore, just like the local fisherman.  Enjoy lunch with the locals. Chat with the Mackerel fishers. Locals will teach you to cook and clean your lobster, and provide all the trimmings.  Prices are based on market prices.

The entire family will enjoy picking out the lobsters. cooking, and eating them with the locals.  You can buy as many as you like.  Eat them right at the shore, or take them with you. 8pm – 11pm: – Sports Night – TEEN DANCE FUNDRAISER will take place at the Port Hawkesbury Fire Hall in Port Hawkesbury. The dance is for students aged 14 to 18 years of age. Student I.D. is required and there will be door prizes. Start your summer off right and join us for Sports Night! Wear your Favorite Jersey and support the Strait United Soccer U15 Girls, the team is made up of girls from Richmond and Inverness Counties. D.J Music- $10.00 cover.

Something new this year is a partnership between KitchenFest! and the lobster festival for a night of music by the popular band, McGinty. Since the group’s inception in 1977 McGinty has been a mainstay on the East Coast music scene.

7pm – 9pm: – Family Square Dance at the Red Islands fire Hall in Red Islands. Admission is $5.00.

Saturday, July 6

9am: –Yoga at the Canal in St. Peter’s. Bring you mat & water. $10.00 or whatever you can afford for the Nicolas Denys Museum.

11am – 3pm –Lobsterfest’sFisherman’s Market will take place at the St. Peter’s Canal. Admission is free. Bring the family and discover the unique work of our local artisans and entrepreneurs. Mackerel Fishing Experience at the St. Peter’s Canal – Wednesday- Saturday. Join in on the tradition of fishing at the Canal! Purchase a fishing bucket and rent a rod for the day at $25.00. Tips and tricks provided by the locals. Everything you need to catch and fry the fish is in your bucket. Burners and frying pans available to use on site. Great fun for young and old. 12pm – 4pm:The Lobster Roll Car Show & Shine will take place at 160 Toulouse Street, at the St. Peter’s Canal. Registration begins at 11:30am.

12pm – 1:30pm: –  Magician at the Marina Bring the family to enjoy the magic show. BBQ hotdogs & water available for purchase. Admission is free.

5pm – 12am: –  Lobsterfest Dockside Party at the Marina in St. Peter’s. Dance the night away. Eddie Madden will start the evening, followed by Ross Rankin and Leona Burkey. This will be a night of great food, music and fun.

Strawberry Festival and Outdoor Mass will be held at the Johnstown Parish Hall inJohnstown.

7pm – 9pm: – Granville Green Outdoor Concert Series Kitchenfest Event at the Granville Green on Granville St. Port Hawkesbury. Free Admission | All ages. Performers: Villages. Each summer, regional and national artists visit Port Hawkesbury to share in this unique musical opportunity. The outdoor concerts are held each Sunday evening overlooking the beautiful Strait of Canso. This year’s series will be held from July 7 to August 11. Bring your blanket or chair for your own comfort, and join us for some amazing music. KitchenFest! is a proud for another year.
